This bronze statue of Osamu Dazai was built in Ashino Park in Kanagi, Goshogawara City, on June 19, 2009, in order to commemorate the centennial of Dazai’s birth. The Dazai Bronze Statue Construction Executive Committee erected the statue in honor of Dazai’s literary contributions. The statue was created by Shinya Nakamura, a sculptor who won the Order of Culture, based on a photograph of Dazai taken in 1944 as he walked around his home in Mitaka City, Tokyo. Approximately 2 meters in height, the bronze figure wearing a cloak is placed on a stone pedestal (about 2 meters high) and faces the direction of Shayokan , the site of his parents’ home.
