Dazai Monument at Kanagi Elementary School

This monument dedicated to Osamu Dazai, located near Ashino Park, was built in the schoolyard of the former Meiji Higher Elementary School (present-day Goshogawara City Kanagi Elementary School) that Dazai attended in his childhood. The writing engraved on the monument—“Smile and Sincere Heart, Shuji”—is an enlarged copy of what was written on the envelope of a letter that Osamu Dazai wrote to his elder brother Bunji in 1936. In order to view the monument located in the middle of the schoolyard, one must first contact Kanagi Elementary School in advance to obtain permission.
