Memory Square
Memory Square is a resting place surrounded by walls embedded with plates bearing the titles of Dazai’s literary works. Dazai is likely to have passed through this neighborhood on his way to higher elementary school. The previous road leading to his school was located near the recently developed current street. In cooperation with Dazai’s eldest daughter, Sonoko Tsushima, and the Dazai Association, Memory Square was built in March 1998 to provide local children with the opportunity to become familiar with this most prominent writer, who was born in their local community, and also provide Dazai fans visiting Kanagi with a resting place on their way to Shayokan and the Dazai Literary Monument.
