Hachimangu Shrine

The buildings of Hachimangu Shrine that burned down in the great fire of 1905 were restored three years later. The shrine chapel recently celebrated its centennial in 2008. The main building was built by the Horiegumi Company, the same company that built the former home of the Tsushima family. There was a private elementary school on the premises of the shrine during the Meiji period. Dazai read books that Take borrowed from the school library for him as instructed by his grandmother. Books from those days are on display in the main chapel of the shrine.
