Unshoji Temple is the family temple of Take, Osamu Dazai’s babysitter during his childhood years. Dazai often visited this temple accompanied by Take. He spent time with Take at this temple and learned morals from her, sometimes watching Buddhist mandala paintings known as Juo Mandala that depict images of heaven and hell, and sometimes playing with the wheels attached to wooden Buddhist tablets made to offer prayers for deceased children. A monument dedicated to Dazai was erected at this temple in 2008, and is engraved with an image of three wooden Buddhist tablets with wheels. The message engraved on the monument (“Tsugaru, I adore thee and I detest thee. Osamu Dazai”) was copied from Dazai’s handwritten manuscript donated to the Kanagi Culture Association.
