Unique local foods of Kanagi

In addition to such local dishes as kenoshiru (vegetable soup) and kaiyaki miso (scallops cooked in miso), various home-style dishes rooted in this region’s culture that warm the hearts of visitors are available in Kanagi.

Young kelp leaves (Wakaoi Konbu) were brought to Kanagi by peddlers from Sotogahama.
Dazai was reportedly very fond of these rice balls wrapped in young kelp leaves.

Kanagi, which was known until the early Showa period as the only place in Aomori Prefecture that had a thoroughbred racecourse, was also a horse-breeding area. Horse meat sashimi is served at restaurants in the town and buns made with horse meat are available in the railway station building in Ashino Park.
Chinese yams

Kanagi-machi ranks second to Tohoku-machi in Japan in terms of the production of Chinese yams. Chinese yams are used in various local dishes, and Nitabo snacks made from Chinese yams are sold in Tsugaru Shamisen Tourist Hall.
