This dinner is a reproduction of Dazai’s favorite local dishes of Tsugaru, made to reflect the original recipe. It comes with a thick slice of grilled salmon and boiled chicken, of which Dazai was familiar while growing up in a family that raised chickens.

A lunchbox made based on a recipe for Osamu Dazai’s dinner. Take-out and catering services are also available. This lunchbox contains Dazai’s favorite local dishes.

This Dazai lunchbox, a collection of Dazai’s favorite dishes, is sold by Tsugaru Railway Company. In Memories of Osamu Dazai (Kodansha) written by Dazai’s wife, Michiko Tsushima, Dazai says, “I like herring, except for their spines.” Herring meat, of which Dazai was not very keen, is cooked with scallops for this lunchbox to suit his taste.

Fine curly noodles of Tsugaru cooked in dried fish stock and soy sauce with local baby bamboo shoots, of which Dazai was very fond, are worth giving a try, even for those not interested in Dazai or his literature. Souvenir packages are also available for sale.

A baked cake made with the juice of apples grown in the prefecture with special care. This unique cake is made with local ingredients, using the bricks of Shayokan, the house in which Dazai grew up, as a motif. All ingredients are homemade, including the cake dough. This product is only sold at four stores.

Dishes reproduced from the menu served when Dazai visited Fukaura-machi to write his literary work entitled Tsugaru. In this work, he writes that “a variety of dishes cooked in different ways using sea bream and scallops are placed on the tray.”

The Dazai 100th Anniversary Lunchbox, Stories of Four Seasons, was prepared to commemorate the centennial of Dazai’s birth. A lunchbox full of seasonal ingredients is sold with an optional small bottle of sake. A different recipe is used for each season. Sake sold with the lunchbox is tasty and comes in a unique bottle featuring an apple-shaped design. The lunch set is sold by a travel agency mainly for groups of tourists.

Oku-Tsugaru Fresh Market If you are interested in the local products of Oku-Tsugaru (northern and western region of Tsugaru), visit the fresh market, where you can enjoy shopping for products sold at low prices. A wide range of fresh and safe food ingredients are available at the market.
